Delusions follows two psychiatrists – Mona and Laith – in a marriage of convenience as they travel around Australia investigating psychiatric cases that appear to have a spiritual element. It is a novel about the disease of war and the insanity of displacement. Mona uses marriage as a ticket to freedom from her withdrawn family, with the ultimate goal of travelling to Egypt where her best friend, Nourah, a Palestinian editor, lives. Laith is searching for Yusuf, a close friend who disappeared after travelling to Gaza as a healthcare worker. Mona and Laith assess four patients across regional Australia: a prisoner in Whadjuk country who claims she is having true dreams; a fruit picker in Kamilaroi country who is seeing a jinn at night; a demolition worker on Larrakia country who believes he has been cursed by the evil eye; and a long-haul fisherman who says he is being visited by an angel. Their research results in a slow spiral downwards, culminating in the pair getting lost in the outback in search of a cameleer who can interpret dreams.
